The nice thing about this little video clip is that you will see the trout take the fly on the second cast, if you look closely.
The fish had been steadily gulping down olives for several minutes before I threw my fly across its path. Okay – it has to be said that I made a few cock-ups trying to land this lively trout but in my defence I was pretty tired, the fish was really energetic and I was urgently trying to get it into the net ‘before’ the film ran out. Nevertheless’ although this is an example of how NOT to land a fish with any sort of great panache I did succeed in the end and the fish was released after its acrobatic endeavours.
Ounce for ounce – not much fights harder than our wild brown trout from the beautiful River Hodder in Lancashire. Taken on ultra light double strength line, 6' midge rod and a tiny dry fly - they are a true joy.
It a wonderful love affair then never dies for the angler.
